A correct diet, which provides all the nutrients necessary for the mother and the fetus, is essential during pregnancy, but there are also a number of foods that should be avoided. Here are what they are and why you should not consume them when you are pregnant.

Raw meat and uncooked seafood. Uncooked meat can contain bacteria such as salmonella and toxoplasmosis that are dangerous for the fetus. For this reason, it is important to consume only thermally prepared meat, through this process the dangerous bacteria are destroyed. This also applies to seafood. Make sure that when you eat Asian food, you only choose products that have been cooked, not raw.

Soft-boiled eggs. There are people who drink raw eggs and if you are among them during pregnancy you must give up this habit. Do not under any circumstances consume raw eggs, the risk of getting sick with salmonella is extremely high. Be careful with salad dressings that may contain traces of raw egg and mayonnaise. At the restaurant, always ask what the sauces contain so that you have no doubts about them. Even soft-boiled eggs are no longer to be consumed during pregnancy. You must only consume them hard, so that, by thermal preparation, any risk is removed.

Liver.Although it is a food rich in iron, the liver also contains a large amount of vitamin A that can harm the fetus.

Unpasteurized milk cheeses.Milk, but also a series of cheeses that are obtained from unpasteurized milk, such as Feta, Camembert, Gorgonzola, Roquefort or Brie and cream cheese that contain unpasteurized milk are to be avoided during pregnancy. This is necessary because of the risk of listeria contamination.

Fish may contain mercury. Mercury is dangerous for the fetus and not only that. Therefore, fish known to be exposed to higher amounts of mercury should be avoided during pregnancy, and for safety, in general, fish consumption should be limited to a maximum of 350 grams per week. It is considered that the fish that contain a large amount of merur are: shark, crucian carp, swordfish, followed by tuna, perch, sea trout.

Alcohol is completely prohibited. It can cause serious problems to the fetus, especially if consumed in excess. But even small amounts of alcohol are not good for the fetus, that’s why doctors forbid alcohol throughout pregnancy and even after, if you are breastfeeding. If you do not comply with this recommendation, you risk fetal alcohol syndrome, abortion or damage to the child’s brain development.
