Science says it too: Mother’s voice wakes up children faster than the alarm clock

We all know that a mother’s presence is life-changing, but a new study suggests that a mother’s voice could also be potentially life-saving.

A new study in The Journal of Pediatrics showed how children respond to two different types of smoke alarms. One played a loud siren sound and the other played a recording of each child’s mother’s voice saying to the child “Wake up! Get out of bed! Get out of the room!”

The results were overwhelming: On average, the children woke up and responded to the sound of their mother’s voice warning them of a fire within 2 seconds. The time to wake a child from an alarm sound it was 156 seconds—almost 3 full minutes.

The researchers note: The mother’s voice woke 86 to 91% of the children, pushing 84 to 86% to successfully perform the escape procedure within five minutes of the start of the alarm. This compares to 52% of children who wake up to the sound of a siren.”

The mother’s voice is more likely to wake the child and take action in the event of a fire, compared to the “traditional” siren sound.

The results of the survey show a deep biological connection between mother and child that can literally make a difference.

Also the results proved once again that there is something unique in a child’s brain that allows it to hear its mother’s voice. So while it may sometimes feel like your child isn’t listening, that’s not the case.
